Användarglädje

Fick chansen att fingra lite på min polares nya iBook igår eftermiddag. Nej, min har inte kommit än och jag väntar fortfarande och hela tiden mer rastlöst på att 8-9 dagar ska passera. Hursomhelst, det går inte att underskatta Apples mördande design och den användarglädje som man fylls av när man sitter framför OS X. Sitta och klicka runt i Finder? Låta talsyntesen knaggligt läsa upp CNN-nyheter? Se hur Quartz Composer-skärmsläckaren slumpar fram nyheter från RSS-prenumerationer? Javisst, allt på samma gång och med lika ljuvt barnsligt nöje. Det är användarglädje som jag inte har känt sedan jag fick byta ut 286:an mot en 486:a som kunde visa små filmsnuttar i 256 färger…

Annars vill jag tipsa om ärkeexhibitionisten Soccer Girls podcast. Jag hade ingen aning om att hon börjat podcasta, men efter att ha lyssnat på ett program så måste jag säga att det verkar lovande.

ID3 tags and podcasting

The soon to be antique religions or all the languages of the world are pretty diverse and multifaceted phenomenon. But sometimes it feels like none of them can match the unholy chaos that is ID3 tagging in the world of podcasts.

I can’t remember ever having sat down in front of a newly ipoddered batch of podcasts without having to change this tag, rename that track, completed that field and so on. What is it with podcasters and ID3 tags? Ok, I understand that the tags were designed for an age prior to pirates and bittorrents, but that does not mean that you have to use them in the worst possible way. Peter over at [blog.forret.com] has done a great job tracing the use of ID3 tags from albums to compilations to podcasts. But what I want is conclusion: What is a good way (combining all of the examples) to tag a podcast?

Take Adam’s podcast for example (forgetting about the worst examples). I’d say that he is one of the more consistent taggers out there, although he’s still suffering from the chaos problem. He’s been talking about tagging on “The Daily Source Code” before, but he did nothing more than explaining his own solution to the problem. Because of the static tracklist of the iPod, the way he’s doing it is by keeping the title tag at a minimum (so that you’ll be able to find the specific podcast on the go) while using the album tag for information about the content of the podcast. All of the other tags are kept static. What this produces is one post in the artist column of the iTunes browser (Adam Curry) and fifty+ freakin’ posts in the album column. Chaos.

So the argument holds that there is no better solution because of the limited functionality of the iPod browser. Yes there is. Look at “The Feast of Fools” podcast, for example. The solution is to first use the snippet information in the title tag “FOF-2005-04-11″ and then — since once you play a track on the iPod the title will begin to scroll — completing with details like “- Burning Up”. That way you can stay out of the album, (hopefully) artist and comment tags and still include all of the information you wish.
